Annual General Meeting 2024

The Society’s AGM will take place on Saturday, 13th July 2024 in the Learning Room of South Shields Museum.

There will be tea/coffee and biscuits being served from 10.30am with the meeting to commence at 11.00am.

Ben Haddon is our speaker whose talk is entitled “Geordie Doon the Pit”.

The museum is located on the pedestrianised part of Ocean Road but there are parking facilities not too far away and it is also close the South Shields transport hub, i.e. metro and bus station.

Research Centre Re-opening

We have moved our Research Centre to New England House.

However, as with all moves, there are a few issues to be resolved.


Our Research Centre will re-open on Monday 22nd July 2024 at 10.00am.

The Society, founded in 1975, promotes interest in family history amongst its members and the general public. We invite you to consider joining and to visit our Research Centre with its library and other research facilities.

We have branches in Blyth, Belmont (Durham), Consett, Hexham, London, Newcastle,  Wansbeck, North Tyneside, South Tyneside.

We have a wide range of publications, parish records in particular, for sale.


  • Free On-Line Records: Indexes to 1,019,036 baptisms, 489,586 marriages, 1,404,423 burials plus 556,834 names mentioned in Northumberland and Durham Probate records between 1701 and 1858, and 34,933 of monumental inscriptions.
